Every hydration app on the App Store shares one design assumption, and it's a bad one.
They assume you'll cooperate.
The reminder fires, and the app's job is done. Everything after that — noticing it, reading it, deciding to act, actually getting up and drinking something — is outsourced to you. The app is a suggestion engine. Compliance is your problem.
For most of the day, in most situations, that's a defensible design. The trouble is that the moments when hydration matters most are precisely the moments when your compliance is worst. And there's no clearer example of that than a night out drinking.
The compliance gap
Look at what's actually on offer in this category and the pattern is hard to miss.
Passive trackers log what you tell them you drank. If you don't log it, nothing happens. If you don't drink, nothing happens. They're a record, not an intervention.
Reminder apps send a notification at a set interval. You swipe it away. By week two, swiping it away has become so reflexive that you're doing it before you've consciously read it — the dismissal itself has become the habit, and the app has quietly turned into wallpaper.
Smart bottles improve the measurement problem considerably, and genuinely remove the friction of manual logging. But they still need you to pick up the bottle. A glowing LED on a bottle sitting in your bag at a bar is not an intervention.
Electrolyte powders and morning-after remedies don't even attempt the behaviour. They're something you take instead of changing what you did.
Every one of these depends on a cooperative user. And they all break at exactly the same point: the moment when the sober, sensible version of you who installed the app is no longer the one holding the phone.
Sip Siren doesn't ask
Sip Siren's mechanic is straightforward and slightly ridiculous, which is the point:
The alarm cuts through silent mode and Focus. Not a notification — an alarm. It's designed to be heard in a loud room, through a pocket, over music. Vibrate is also an option available in the settings.
It doesn't stop until you record a short video of yourself drinking. Not a checkbox. Not a "yes I did it" button. Video proof, which is verified.
The consequence is that there's no version of turning the alarm off that doesn't involve actually drinking water. You can't reflex-dismiss it, because there's nothing to dismiss. You can't tell it you drank when you didn't, because it doesn't take your word for it. The gap between acknowledging a reminder and doing the thing — the gap every other app in this category leaks its users through — closes completely.
This is what behavioural economists call a commitment device: something you set up in advance, while you're sober and rational, that constrains your later self at the moment they'd rather not comply. You're not relying on willpower at 11pm. You've pre-committed, and the system holds the line.
Why drinking nights are the hardest case
Alcohol switches off vasopressin, the hormone that tells your kidneys to retain water. The effect starts fast — urine output climbs within about twenty minutes — and it's substantial: roughly 250 ml of an alcoholic drink can lead your body to expel 800 to 1,000 ml of urine over the following hours. Four times more out than in, for hours, while the hormone that would normally stop it sits offline.

The important thing here isn't the physiology — it's the timing. The fluid deficit accumulates gradually, drink by drink, and the only effective response is drinking water steadily throughout the night, in amounts your body can actually absorb.
Which requires you to remember and act on a plan, repeatedly, over four hours, while progressively less capable of doing either.
This is where compliance-based tools fail hardest. A notification at 10:30pm in a loud bar goes unnoticed or unread. And even noticed, ordering a water while everyone else orders another round takes a small amount of social initiative that gets harder, not easier, as the night goes on.
An alarm that won't stop until you've physically drunk something doesn't require any of that. Complying becomes easier than not complying. That's the whole design.
Setting it up before you go out
- Set alarms every 45–60 minutes across the window you'll be out, timed to land between drinks.
- Drink one before you leave. Starting well-hydrated meaningfully changes how hard the diuretic effect lands — being behind early compounds all night.
- Pick a tone that cuts through a loud room, or a vibrate you'll feel in your pocket. The mechanism depends entirely on you hearing or feeling it.
- Set one for when you get home and one for the morning. Neither undoes the night, but the dehydration-driven part of how you feel is genuinely responsive to fluid.
Do all of this before the first drink. That's the point of a commitment device — the setup belongs to the person who's still making good decisions.
The point
Most apps in this category are polite. They tell you what you already know, at a moment you're not able to act on it, and then leave the hard part to you.
You already know to drink water between drinks. Everyone knows. The gap has never been information — it's that the person who made the plan and the person who has to execute it are, by 11pm, not really the same person.
